Black and White Wednesday - "The Lady Behind the Lens"

January 20, 2010

Welcome to week number two!

If you missed out last week or you are new to this blog, check out my sidebar... I have created a link list for "Black and White Wednesdays" and will update it each week linking the newest post. I also included a link to explain what Black and White Wednesdays are all about:)

Last week I shared with you all what I had in mind for our hallway..... I want some real life candids in addition to some studio style shots and I also wanted to have some things that represent our family and the places we love to go and visit. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it??

As the week went on and I started to look through the archives of pictures from this past year, the one thing that was strikingly obvious...... I AM NEVER IN ANY OF THE PHOTOS. It is no fault but my own, because I will never pass the camera.....and quite honestly, I do not like being on the other side of the lens.

Along with the goal of filling up the wall..... I also realize that I need to try to work myself into a photo or two from time to time.....and while we are at it..... I need to get Pat, my husband, to get in more photos as well!! I want to make sure the kids have memories of their childhood, but also memories of their Mom and Dad.

Getting Pat into photos should be easy.... but how do I get myself in photos and still be the person to take the photo?

I set up a great challenge....more like a test, that took me WAY OUT of my comfort zone......

Do you know where I am going with this one??

Yep, you guessed it.....

I Put myself on the other side of the camera to get a taste of what I put the kids through.

The sitting area in our bedroom got turned into a makeshift little studio. I set my camera on a tripod and used the timer. You can also use a shutter release, but I chose not to because mine is not wireless and the wire is always getting in the way. The only other thing I used was a white reflector to help bounce some light.

Figuring out where I wanted to place the tripod and how I wanted to frame the shot was not so bad, but the hardest part was finding the right place to focus.....

I had to visualize where my head would be in the chair and aim the camera and then quick jump into place. It sounded easy in my mind, but wasn't quite as simple as I thought.......

Every single shot, I had to get up and look back through the camera, reset it, click the button, then quick run and get into postion again. Trust me.... do this for an hour and you can skip the gym.....and eat a piece of cake for dessert and not feel an ounce of guilt:)

The goal was to get one usable picture of myself...... I deleted many photos.... some of them I had inadvertantly cut off my head or the focus was not on my face and the overall picture was just plain blurry, but in the end, I feel I got a few usable photos, but this one was probably the best of the bunch.

Me Final Edit eye clone 3 WM

So...I gave you the set up, now let's talk about editing.....

OH GOSH... I am so use to editing photos of children.....looking at a picture of yourself zoomed in all the way in Adobe Photoshop can be a frightening.....and an eye opening experience. Let's just say that the sharpening tool is not the friend of a middle aged woman and I opted to give the picture a softer....{more forgiving}look!!

While I won't drag you through every detail or explain each step of the editing process, what I can tell you is that I use both Lightroom 2.0 and Adobe Photoshop CS3. I adjust things like white balance and exposure in Lightroom, but the majority of my editing is done in CS3.

I try to achieve the desired look in full color first....than convert it to black and white.

Me Final Edit eye clone 1 BW Vanilla 3 WM
I think I prefer this photo in color, but the point of this weekly challenge is to start printing out more black and whites........

There you have it....photo number two heading to the wall:) The Lady Behind the Lens........ I don't think you will be seeing me step in front of the camera very often.....but I will make an occasional appearance!

This was definitely a challenge for me and I urge any of you that never pass the camera, to give it a try!! BTW, if any of you have tried this and have any ideas or suggestions...please let me know, I would love to hear from you!

Okay my friends...... now it is your turn to show me what you came up with this week! I can't wait to make my way around to all of your blogs!! Don't forget to link and/or leave me a comment.

If you have any questions, write the question in the comment section, and then check back..... I will answer you back in the comment section as well:)

Happy Wednesday and Happy Shooting!!

Lisa,

I'm so glad to see your face! (I have caught one or two pictures of you in past posts but they are far and few between.) And your right - we need to get into more pictures. I hardly have any of my Mom and Dad when I was growing up. It's so important.

I love this picture of you. There is such a softness to your skin, yet it is sharp enough. (Sometimes I think I like myself better with my old point and shoot. A 50mm fixed f/1.4 is fabulous for the kids. Me? Not so much!)

It's so interesting that you edit it all in color and then convert it. Is this something you can do in PS and not Lightroom? I think in Lightroom 2.5 - when we convert to Grayscale, it takes it back to the original import. But I may be wrong - I'll have to check.

I've been doing the delay and run for quite awhile. I'm usually screaming...ahem....suggesting that NOBODY MOVE as I'm running back and forth. Odd though, I haven't lost any weight.

Thank you Lisa for starting this. I'm really having fun.

xoxo

How cute are you???!!! I prefer it in color too. I appreciate what you are doing...it has me thinking about looking for my camera, which is a step in the right direction.

Baby steps right?

You definitely need to be in more pictures. I am always shocked at what the camera does to my mental self image, then I notic everyone else looks fine, so it turns out I am DELUSIONAL when it comes to my perceptions. I am a reverse anorexic, I see a young skinny me in my head....reality is a harsh friend.

Keep up the great motivational ideas.

Wonderful photo! You SHOULD post more of you. We use our timer occaisionally to take group photos but usually we trade off so get pictures of each of us with AA.
I may join you some Wednesday!
Great idea.

I can see you now.. running back and forth.. TEEHEE!!!!! What a funny mental picture you painted! ;)

This photo is a great one for your wall! love it!

Absolutely stunning my friend...beautiful!!!!
I can just imagine what that set up to take the picture looked like!

Honestly I love both versions...

I love the photo! (And may I just say how jealous I am that you can pull off those glasses? I think they are so stylish, but I try them, and I look like I belong in a library. Which is one of my favorite places to be, incidentally, so maybe it's not the glasses so much as the personality ...)

My problem with being in pictures is that my husband isn't a big fan of photography, so I always feel guilty asking him to take a picture with me in it. I do want our girls to have pictures of both their parents, though, so I am working on overcoming that!

oh lisa, i'm laughing just visualizing you running back in forth, catching your breath, smiling, jumping back up, & repeat!
hysterical!
but you my friend
are
SIMPLY
GORGEOUS!
dang woman!!

i love your hair
i love your glasses
i really want that ring
& the chunky pearls bracelet

looking forward to your gallery in the hallway!
i have a friend who has a spectacular home & i love everything in it
she has a 'reading room', or maybe she called it her napping room...the house is ginormous, the walls are in white beadboard
with the entire room covered in family photos all set in black frames. black toile on her daybed & it is insanelycool!
so all that to say, if you have a napping room, you too can cover not just one wall but all the walls!
can you imagine?
xo

Lisa... you are GORGEOUS, friend!! :) Seriously beautiful! And that's an extra compliment to someone who was aparently running up some aerobic activity during this shoot!! ;)

Thanks for the editing lesson, too. I love these helpful tips! And I so appreciate your email last week with your camera advice. I can't wait to shop for a dslr of my own!! In the meantime, my Nikon point and shoot will have to suffice.

Like you, I also prefer this particular photo in color. The background and coloring have almost a sepia-like tone to them. But it's still beautiful in B&W! This would be a great profile photo!

Have a blessed day! <><

You are so pretty Lisa! And I just LOVE that you are going to have this GREAT picture in your hallway! Very nice!

Dita said...

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Oh, well...c'mon, you know me...PLENTY!

First, I believe this is the very best picture I have ever seen of you, bar none. It doesn't surprise me that it was taken by one of the most talented photographers I know...YOU! I can't even believe how you set it up and pulled it off. I am completely inspired.

The B&W will be gorgeous on your wall but to me, the color version is absolutely stunning. I'd like to see that framed somewhere in the house too AND as your profile picture.

This is the girl I see when we sit across the table at lunch...smart, confident, funny, talented, beautiful, sensitive, silly and oh so sweet.

I suffer from the same "refusal to pass the cameraitis" as well. Recently a friend looked at a slideshow I did of a big family vacation with my family and siblings, mom and friends (there were several hundred pictures) and said...if it weren't for the 2 of you at the end I would have never even known you were there with them.

I will begin to include myself in photos more as well. I like Tonggu Mama's idea but ONCE a WEEK...well, TM, THAT'LL NEVER happen.

Thanks for all the photog tips on this one too, Lisa...fantastic.

Now go change all your profile pictures to this delicious one!

xoxoxo

Lisa I LOVE it ... Great job! I love the warm colors ... you look GREAT! Love the little sparkle in your eyes. I was wondering if you used an umbrella because the lighting is just perfect - the reflector did a very nice job!! I love the great contrast in your black & white conversion! I have a hard time figuring out how much contast to place on the black & white pictures so this will be a great challenge for me! Your hard work paid off ... very pretty protrait!

Take care!

Love the self-portrait idea! I doubt I will be brave enough to do it. I tend to keep at least one kiddo in the pic with me to "distract" the viewer! ;-)

Hi Lisa! This is my first time visiting your blog. I found my way from Football & Fried Rice, and am so glad I did! I love this idea of Black & White Wednesday. I just plain love black & white photography!

This is a beautiful photo of you. Such a natural capture. I agree, I think I do prefer the warmth of the color version. But the black & white is lovely as well! Gorgeous!

Absolutely love, love, love your self portrait. I was actually thinking about doing one but I don't have all the extra equipment. Who knew taking up photography as a hobby would be so expensive! ;-)

Might try one next week via a reflection in the bathroom mirror.

Look forward to next week!

Beautiful pic, Lisa! I am glad that you are in front of the camera for a change. I have been working on that one myself, too. Our littles deserve to see some pics of us when they are older. Loved the way you processed this. I am not sure which I like better, the color or the black and white? They are stunning!

Mimi said...

Lisa, I think this pic is lovely. I don't know how you look in real life, but you certainly look great here.
Which of us is happy with ourselves in photos?

And the trouble with photographers (prof or amateur) is that they don't come out the other side of the camera- I know, I'm married to one! It's hell trying to get photos of him. But I agree with you that it's important for the kids. He lets them take him sometimes, in return for them letting him take them. And I'm happy to have pictures of all of them!

You are such a sexy Momma & what a great idea! I was going to post and the ONLY child I had a picture of was Mya (again!) I felt bad. I will try to do it tomorrow (of course, I am going to date it for WED) Maybe I will break out the tripod myself!!

I love photo editing (mine is not fancy) but I can take away my age spot in the middle of my forehead :)

NO more of that!

Glad you put yourself in a picture. I just looking for a new photo for my profile and I discovered that over 800 pictures have been taken in December and January and I was in exactly 3 of them. None of them were very good for a profile shot either.

My question is how did you learn Photoshop? Take a class or trial and error? I received it for Christmas and have yet to even install it on my computer...yikes.

Also, which lenses do you shoot with most often?

I like the color on better too...the browns are so good in it. You are so pretty and stylish!

When I think about photography I think about you...you have to see the picture of the little boy they pulled out of the rubble in Haiti yesterday!!! He is 7...and smiling when they pulled him out. I had seen the picture a few times but then this morning I saw the footage and it all happened in just a few seconds...thank goodness that great photographer there captured the greatest picture. I hope you can see it.

Also it's Friday and we are having meatball subs and cauliflower dipped in egg, bread crumbs and browned in olive oil. I am HUNGRY!

Oh girlfriend,
You know me and my lack of technical saavy!! But I do know a beautiful photo when I see one ;)

This is gorgeous...I like the color version better because of the pop in your magnificent eyes. However, the black and white gives it a different type of sophistication that I simply adore! I love your theme for Wednesday, but since I really do not photo process, I suppose I need to sit this one out! But I will be checking out folks' Wednesdays! :)

The veil is beginning to lift in this neck of the woods...I was offered a position at Em's school, yippee!! It is part time, yippee!! And it fits our schedules, yippee! Just getting acquainted and settling in, once that has happened, no, I have not forgotten getting together. In fact, really looking forward to it!!!

SO many compliments on your photos, I cannot even begin to tell you!

Have a wonderful week!!
